Lee Young-ae, a professor of consumer science at Incheon University, said that “price competitiveness”, “curiosity about new things” and “the ability to shop quickly” made unmanned stores appeal to consumers.
But if an employeeless store is to last long, problems such as security must be addressed, the professor said.
“It may seem like a lot of people use these services because they didn't exist before. But in the long run, customers can become tired or confused if the information or services they need (unmanned stores) are not provided.”
How will the automation boom affect the job market?
Jung-hee Lee, a professor at Chung-Ang University's School of Business and Economics, said, "The demand for stores without employees will continue to increase in the future."
“We have already experienced the contactless era. And since (business owners) are faced with issues such as labor costs and manpower management, an employeeless store can be an alternative. We expect the demand for similar business models to continue to grow,” said Professor Lee.
Stores without employees often appeal to prospective store owners because of their low upfront costs amid rising labor costs.
According to a survey by the Korea Economic Research Institute last year, as the minimum wage increased by 16.4% in 2018, many low-wage jobs disappeared, and those who got hired received higher wages.
In a survey conducted by the Federation of Small Businesses earlier this month, 87% of small business owners said it would be difficult to pay if the minimum wage is increased next year.
To help small businesses, the government announced earlier this year plans to "smart supermarkets" in hundreds of supermarkets, equipped with access check systems, self-checkout kiosks and security devices.
“This is a trend that the government cannot stop. It could also create jobs in new areas such as solution companies focused on unmanned stores, including kiosks and other automated systems. As a result, low-skilled jobs are likely to disappear.
“Rather than focusing on these specific trends, the government should come up with a comprehensive countermeasure against the disappearance of jobs such as cashiers,” the professor said.
